How to use this calculator

1. Choose your shape: Rectangle for slabs and beds, Circle for round areas, Path/Strip for walkways and borders.

2. Adjust dimensions: Default values are pre-filled (10×10 ft, 2 in deep). Use depth preset chips or type any value. Toggle Imperial / Metric at any time.

3. Select sand type: Each type has a different density — the calculator adjusts automatically. A tip appears explaining the best use.

4. Set waste factor: 10% is recommended. Increase for uneven terrain or irregular shapes.

5. Optional cost: Enter price per ton or per cubic yard — whichever your supplier quotes.

Bags vs. Bulk: For projects under 0.5 cu yd (~700 lbs), bags are convenient. Over that threshold, bulk delivery is far cheaper — typically $25–$55/ton vs. $5–$7 per 50 lb bag at retail.

Formula used

Rectangle / Path:

Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)
Depth (ft) = Depth (in) ÷ 12
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × Density (t/yd³)
Weight (lbs) = Weight (tons) × 2,000
50 lb bags = ⌈Volume (ft³) ÷ 0.5⌉
With waste = Volume (cu yd) × (1 + waste%)

Circle:

Radius (ft) = Diameter (ft) ÷ 2
Volume (ft³) = π × Radius² × Depth (ft)
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27

Sand densities used:

Concrete / Mason / Paver / Fill Sand (dry): 1.35 t/yd³ (100 lb/ft³)
Play Sand: 1.18 t/yd³ (87.5 lb/ft³)
Wet Sand: 1.70 t/yd³ (126 lb/ft³)
50 lb bag volume: 0.50 ft³
1 cu yd = 27 cu ft | 1 ft = 0.3048 m | 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m³
