How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total length and height of your wall in the left column.
  2. Specify the thickness (standard is 8-10 inches for exterior walls).
  3. Subtract the area of any doors or windows in the "Openings" field.
  4. Select your concrete type and add a waste factor (10% is standard).
  5. Review the live 3D shape and the results below for total volume, bags, weight, and cost estimates.

Formulas Used

  • Volume (cu ft): (Length × Height × Thickness × Num Walls) - (Openings Area × Thickness)
  • Volume (cu yd): Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
  • Bags Needed: Volume (cu ft) ÷ Bag Volume (0.45 for 60lb, 0.60 for 80lb)
  • Weight: Volume (cu ft) × Density (150 lbs/cu ft for standard)
  • Rebar Sticks: Total Rebar Length (ft) ÷ 20

Concrete Wall Thickness Guide

  • 4 inches: Non-load-bearing interior partition walls.
  • 6 inches: Standard interior load-bearing walls.
  • 8 inches: Standard exterior walls and retaining walls up to 4ft.
  • 10-12 inches: Foundation walls, basement walls, and tall retaining walls.

Cost Factors & Estimates

Our cost estimates are based on national averages for material only:

  • Ready-Mix Concrete: $125 – $165 per cubic yard.
  • Bagged Concrete: Typically costs 30-50% more per cubic yard than ready-mix.
  • Delivery Fees: Ready-mix trucks may charge short-load fees for orders under 10 cubic yards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much waste should I add? 10% is standard for flatwork, but 15-20% is recommended for complex forms or footings.
  • Do I need rebar in my wall? Yes, for structural walls, retaining walls, or any wall over 4 feet tall. Horizontal and vertical rebar prevents cracking.
  • Can I mix bagged concrete for a large wall? Yes, but for walls requiring more than 2 cubic yards, ordering ready-mix is significantly cheaper and ensures a consistent pour.
