Common questions about concrete volume

Quick answers for the most-asked questions on this topic.

Multiply the slab’s length × width × thickness, all in feet, to get cubic feet. Then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. For example, a 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 inches (0.33 ft) thick = 33 cubic feet = 1.22 cubic yards. Our concrete slab calculator does this automatically and adds a 10% waste buffer.
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Ready-mix concrete is ordered in cubic yards; bagged concrete is measured in cubic feet per bag. Our cubic yard calculator converts between both units and shows your equivalent bag count for 60 lb and 80 lb bags.
At 4 inches thick, one cubic yard covers approximately 81 square feet. At 6 inches thick it covers about 54 square feet. The formula: coverage (sq ft) = 27 ÷ thickness (ft). Thicker pours — like driveways at 6 inches — require significantly more material per square foot than thin sidewalk slabs.
Yes — industry standard practice is to add 10% to your calculated volume to account for spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. All calculators on this site include a waste-adjusted result row by default. Never order the exact theoretical volume for a ready-mix pour.
Yes. All results are output in cubic yards, which is the unit ready-mix suppliers use for quoting and ordering. Use the waste-adjusted figure when calling your supplier. For projects under 1 cubic yard, bagged concrete is usually more practical — our calculators show the bag count equivalent for both 60 lb and 80 lb bags.
